Support Yourself!

This month’s newsletter has an underlying theme about “support”. You need both good sleeping habits as well as a quality mattress to support you during rest. You also need a good base of support, provided by a strong core and well-adjusted lower extremities to protect the low back from stresses and strains (both ordinary and extreme). Please read the brief articles here and be sure to schedule your appointment ASAP to “support” your spine and overall health!

Best Sleeping Position
We often get asked about the best sleeping position. Here’s the short answer: the best sleeping position is the one that gives you the most restful sleep without overly distorting your body’s mechanics! Knowing this, let’s examine and improve the three positions we are familiar with:

  1. Back sleeping: This is a good position for some people. One way to make it better would be to add a cushion or a pillow under your knees to take stress off your back. Also, a flatter pillow is generally recommended to lower the tension in the neck.
  2. Side sleeping: A good sleeping position that can be improved by propping a pillow between the knees. For the neck and head, a higher pillow is typically recommended to better support the neck-to-shoulder difference.
  3. Stomach sleeping: This sleeping position typically strains the neck and increases your lower back curvature. Avoid it as much as possible!

Try the above recommendations and become aware of how you are sleeping. Many spinal issues can be prevented by improving the mechanics of our sleep positions. Also, it may be time for a new mattress. (Replacing your mattress at least every eight years is recommended.)

The Achy Lower Back Arch
If you feel your lower back right now, you probably will feel a forward arch. This is completely normal and needs to be maintained for a healthy spine. Unfortunately unsupportive chairs, sofas car seats and prolonged sitting have caused our lumbar spine curve (called lordosis) to shift from its normal healthy position. The shift can be significant because it can also cause changes to your neck curve. Initially your body will try to compensate for these changes, but eventually the uneven structure will cause increased wear and tear. These alterations to normal posture can cause slouching, abnormal muscle contraction, headaches and back pain.

So let us start supporting this arch in the lower back by first becoming aware of it, and secondly by making sure that we do the following:

  1. Catch yourself when you are slouching and immediately pull your chin in and bring your chest up
  2. If you are in your car frequently, make sure you use a lumbar support. Products like the back vitalizer are compact and easy to travel with
  3. Ask your chiropractor for specific strengthening exercises for your spine. Certain exercises can do more harm than good depending on your back condition
  4. Have your feet assessed to determine if you need prescribed foot orthotics. Weak unsupported foot arches can cause poor biomechanical alterations in the whole body

Supporting your lumbar lordosis is important for a strong and stable core. Attention to our lifestyle habits can go a long way in preventing and managing structural spinal issues. Call today to schedule your appointment to help with lower back pain!
